Too much stress can kill, but not enough stress will kill you sooner. The human being is meant to strive. Like all living organisms.

Most people do much too little.

Muscles need stress. Bones need stress. The heart needs to be pushed into its upper reaches on a daily basis.

If you do this, you’ll look better than any cosmetic surgery, and it’ll be real.

Ageing is no excuse for complacency. It’s all the more reason to be vigilant.

Poise Under Pressure – Last Call For Hot Yoga

You see this in sports. The big moment comes. Instead of rushing it, you stretch it out. You let it ripen. You slow the moment down, waiting for the fruit to get plump and drop into your palm effortlessly.

Poise under pressure is all about timing. It’s about keeping your head, keeping your cool. It’s an important lesson for everyday life. It’s good to practice this.

You’ve got a lot to do. It requires split-second timing. Well-honed timing is cost-efficient, energy-efficient. Trying not to over or under work it, and harnessing the currents of life.

Last hot yoga before the summer break is tonight!

Managing Your Expectations

At a younger and more blindly optimistic age, I would have benefited from someone talking to me about managing my expectations. If someone had, and more than probably they did, I wouldn’t have listened.

Enabling the deluded isn’t what real friends do. Real friend have your back. Conceits have a way of catching up with you and exacting an ugly toll. The universe doesn’t like hubris.

Humility. Egolessness. These qualities provide a healthy groundedness to the competitive challenges of the world.

If you’re not a professional ballerina by much younger than 30, or a rock star by much much younger than 40, it’s time to change your MO. And your wardrobe. The leopard skin tights have gotta go.

Or, if you’re expecting a chorus of angels to descend from the heavens when your future husband walks through the door, you might want to try a second date. Some people take a little while to grow on you.

We may think we’re misunderstood geniuses.  Or we’re as hot now as we were 10 or 20 or 30 years ago. But we’ll never find joy in ordinary things – like your compulsory daily workout, for example – if our expectations are misaligned with reality.

The chorus of angels does come. We may just need to take an honest look in the mirror, and know our level. Hey, this is for me. Maybe not the youngest or richest or more beautiful, but he or she is alright with you…  a nice body though.

Setting Parameters

The Laissez-faire attitude doesn’t alway work. You may find it takes some rules to get the results you’re looking for. Establishing guidelines are usually necessary to keep you from falling off the tracks and see-sawing into futility. Falling off is inevitable, a few iron-clad dictates keeps you from falling too far.

Some things should be obvious. For example, you never ever eat fast food – no matter how drunk or desperately hungry you get. That’s a no-brainer. You never eat canned food, poutine, processed cheese let along a pizza with pepperoni on it.

You need boundaries you never cross under any condition. You’ll never be stranded on a desert island with only Macdonald’s to choose from. Be honest with yourself. When ready to expand your repertoire of healthy rituals, the low end of your eating scale never gets that low, no matter what.

Here’s a simple ritual you can do that will facilitate weight lose and improve your health. Don’t eat for one hour when you first get up. And drink at least one litre of filtered water. Then, and only then, can you have your fiber cereal or smoothie or whatever it is you have.

Do this, you will immediately feel the difference. It shrinks your stomach and appetite, and helps you familiarize with the sensation of being empty. Empty out, before stuffing more in. Only after your first bowel movement should you eat.

People put too much stock in studies, but I don’t. You can find studies to prove anything, and public opinion blows with the wind. I put stock in my own experience. If you make the right decisions it shows, you see it and feel it.

Old War Wounds Tell All

The way to fix an injury is to continue hurting it further in minor ways. But not in such a way that it becomes a chronic weakness. My horrific hamstring tear of 2 years ago is constantly being strategically re-hurt through spin class, hot yoga, squats occasionally, and hockey.

By fighting fire with fire, and doing the exact opposite of one’s first impulse, which is to coddle and protect the injury, the torn seam and surrounding muscles are strengthened. That way, in cold damp weather, old war wounds don’t hound you to the grave.

On the other hand, my water skiing days are over. Water skiing is how I tore it after a long week of too much exercise. My legs were tight. And it was chilly before lifting off the dock and getting flung gracelessly feet-over-kettle.

To shock the natives, I’d brazenly drop my pants and display the vivid purple of internal bleeding from butt to ankle. You can feel the dent where the muscle ripped away from the bone.

It’s one of life’s paradoxes that building energy requires expending it, and getting strong involves activating the body’s natural ability to recuperate.

A body in motion stays in motion. So keep moving.

Freshness Is Absolute

Forget about reheating cooked vegetables. Just throw the leftovers out.

Even if it’s only been a few hours. Limp and lifeless veggies have no flavour at all because they’re dead. You’re body won’t want them.  The window of opportunity for your la dente veggie stirfy is narrow indeed.  And what doesn’t get eaten right away goes into the compost.

Vegetables are delicate creatures. Don’t treat them like meat. Less is more in terms of cooking them. You should feel the energy it gives you afterwards.

For a fantastic and simple salad, try thee most delicious greens, arugula and watercress. With sun dried tomatoes, marinated mushrooms, finely chopped onion, etc.

Finally the dressing. Squeeze some orange and/or lemon over it, and carefully sprinkle on a little olive and rice vinegar by putting your finger over the spout.  Or a tahini and lemon mixture over top is a crowd-pleaser. Don’t douse it.

Eat at least one salad at day. Eat 3 if you like. Fruit and seeds takes your salad to another level.

Get those croûtons out of there.

Creating A Sense Of Urgency

Our society is competitive. Whether we are aware of it or not, we are competing for a mate, livelihood, housing, etc.

That’s why people are fascinated with sports. Sporting events are a metaphor for the clash of wills playing itself out in our daily lives.

We watch. We identify with one side or the other. In this town, by now, we’ve learned to be neutral and impartial and appreciate the artistry on both sides.

In desperate times, a whole other level can be achieved. Look how many times the losing team ties the score, in the dying seconds, and forces overtime.

If you could just bottle that. Or fabricate it artificially. That’s what a coach does.  With his words, his emotion, he creates a sense of urgency.

Do it as if your life depended on it. With passion. People lose weight not because they’re on this or that diet, but because they can’t stand being fat any more. They got sick to death of all the dithering thoughts and just did it.

Expect to scratch and claw. Expect hard work. Take it a day at a time, a morning at a time, a night at a time. Keep humble.

Feeling Good With Your Shirt Off Again

I lost 6 lbs last week. Here’s how I did it.

I stopped eating cereal. And with that went the Almond and Soy Milk.

Because sometimes I dine with my clients, I eat often. Even eating well, you get bigger. I wasn’t listening to my own advice. Of having one big beautiful substantial meal a day, and many mini-ones.

In other words, I was eating like a pig. I cut back a little on the amount, and just ate raw and cooked vegetables and fruit. A good trail mix. Portobello, fiber powder in smoothie, carrots with the bushy heads, celery, turmeric, Nama Shoyu.

My one main meal was usually a stir-fry. Cauliflower and zucchini, for example, in an awesome sauce, with say, chopped avocado on top.

I put my metabolism into fat burning mode just by eating raw and cooked vegetables. And fruit. It’s not hard to do because everything is delicious.

On Mother’s Day, I went out back to the porch in the sun. I folded a towel and placed it on this wicker 2-person seat to protect my back. I lied down with a pillow under my head. And, shamelessly, did my elbow-to-knee crunches.

I started off with sets of 50, resting in between to feel the sun on my stomach. Abs are different than other muscles. When you have muscle memory, they get stronger right away. I do 100 rep sets, 150 reps, eventually I did 600 reps.

What a wonderful pleasant meditation. My stomach was much tighter and flatter afterwards, remarkably so. You can’t buy that. You only get that with honest hard work.

Ramping Up Raw With The Messaged Kale Salad

Only when the dual jets of exercise and diet are combined, does liftoff really happen in a permanent way. Too often you see progress hindered and limping along or see-sawing back-and-forth because the person is doing one but not the other.

Try raw for the most dramatic and inspiring results. Don’t think, I’m exercising now so my weight is going to start dropping in a few months. If it doesn’t start happening right away,  or almost right away, you’re simply not doing it right yet.

At first, it seems to require a little multi-tasking. But soon it becomes your normal routine. You work from outside in, through exercise, and the inside out, through diet, for a transformation that sticks.

There’s no other way.

This salad is a wonderfully tactile experience.  You wash your hands. The kale is soften not by cooking it, but by messaging in an avocado. It gushes between your fingers. Add a dollop of olive oil and apple cider. Chopped up red bell peppers, red onion. sea salt, peppercorn, pumpkin seeds. Super easy.

Eat and eat and eat. Eat as much as you like. It’s not going hurt you, or put on an ounce. And how could it not be magic for the bowels?
