Think about turning weaknesses into strengths.
It not only can be done. It must be done. As a strategy, it’s sound. Maybe your abs are the weak link, maybe flexibility. Maybe your flexibility is amazing, but you’ve floppy triceps and no upper body strength. Or saddlebags.
Whatever it is, try focusing almost exclusively on that problematic area for a while. If you’re flabby, focus on that. That may mean a ton of abs-work, squats, and long sweaty cardios.
The body is communicating to you. The body doesn’t lie. The mind, on the other hand, is full of rationalizations, denials, blind spots. This is the dilemma of a personal trainer. How much honesty can someone handle, keeping in mind that results are the priority?
Sometime a gentle, compassionate approach works. Sometimes the positive approach has already been tried and failed. The client needs to be challenge, and held accountable. The truth must be told one way or the other.
That’s why personal training is personal. It’s a personal relationship. The result is the confidence only a fit body can provide. An easing of anxiety, neurosis. It’s a reminder of what’s real. And what matters.
Ian is teaching Yoga this Friday. Saturday Abs Class is back. And Tues Abs will start back up on Jan. 12.
