A Seemingly Futile Struggle

The more effort you put into your abs, the less inclined you are to wreck all your hard work by eating crap. You don’t feel like slaughtering an extra large pizza with double cheese after an abs class.

Especially when you start noticing those faint inklings of definition. You’re hungry for more. You develop an appetite for success. And success is the greatest motivator of all.

I’ve seen it again and again. After a long seemingly futile struggle, the person suddenly gets it. The eureka moment. You break through. Now nothing can stop you.

Until the next plateau. So don’t lose heart. Know it’s not only a process but a lifestyle. And sometimes it requires managing your expectations.

For Core N Stretch, I’ve shamelessly pilfered Niki’s Hot Yoga class for sustain low-rep ab-clutching postures. And combine it with a personal penchant for high-rep cardio-ish sets of a variety of crunches.

Ciao, Pietro

Festering Bowels

Feel like you’re about to give birth to something evil?

Rectifying that distended lower abdomen starts with tightening those slack muscles. Noxious food combing and overeating combine to enlarge and deform the intestines.

Drinking beer doesn’t help.

Vigorously working your abs has immediate impact. Cardio via your abs with mega-highreps, and slow controlled flexes and stretches, forgives a lot of sins.

All the cardio and abs-work makes you more conscious of what you’re putting in your body, hopefully:) You work from the outside in, through exercise, and inside out, through diet.

The solution. Tons of Fiber (for most people). Not just the allotment in your morning cereal; add a heaping spoonful of herbal fiber every day to your smoothie.

Don’t go cold-turkey if you don’t want to. Take the middle road, like the Buddhists say. Going in the right direction is what counts. Enjoy the process.

Here’s a plug for System’s Fitness. This time, Rui is having an opening for his own photography. Mi amigo Rui is a special talent, and the complimentary wine will be flowing.

Rolling Around On A Mat

Exerting your energy to increase it, is one of life’s great ironies. And the increase is generous at any age.

Nobody has the stubborn patience to do on their own what we’ll be doing at Core N Stretch starting this Saturday. Methodically prying open the major joints, and pounding the mid-section from every angle. My abs aren’t super developed yet. I don’t have the advantage I have in spin.

Spinning five days a week, for 13 years, forces the body to adapt. A fitness instructor develops the peculiarities of his profession. What for others is a strenuous ordeal feels like not much more than a vigorous walk in the park, at least within the narrow groove of his specialty.

By tapping up your daily workout regiment, you discover an opportunity to deepen your recuperative reserves for when you need them most. And sooner or later, you always need them.

Maxing out on your workouts requires a corresponding improvement in the quality of your rest. Resting well is a skill you learn not by trying harder but by letting go of all effort. For anyone reaching the limit of his or her capacity, as in the case of professional athletes, and sometimes fitness instructors, this paradox becomes your focus.

See you tonight at hot yoga, and Saturday morning for Core N Stretch.

Ciao, Pietro
